THE BENEFITS OF GOOD HOME INSULATION

As we wave goodbye to the summer, keeping warm is back on our radar and good home insulation is at the top of our list!

Think about your home through the last few seasons… Did some rooms feel colder than others, or did your heating bills go up last winter? Did feel like you were roasting during the summer? Those could be signs that your home insulation needs attention.

Good home insulation has so many benefits. Of course it keeps you warm in winter, but did you know it can also make you more comfortable during the warmer months, and it can make your home quieter all year round? Energy-efficiency means it’s good for the environment and saves you money, so it’s a cost-effective way to improve many aspects of your home.

Insulation makes your home more energy-efficient

If your home isn’t well-insulated (eg: if insulation is poor quality, or if it’s old and cracked/worn out) air that has been heated escapes and you’re left with cooler air indoors. This is similar to leaving a window open, and means your heating will constantly be working harder to keep you warm.

The biggest benefit of good insulation is that much less heat can escape, so your home stays warmer for longer but uses less energy – a big win for saving money and protecting the environment.

Whether you use gas or electric heating, you can lose as much as 50% of heating energy if your insulation isn’t doing its job. It doesn’t take much to properly insulate your home and save on bills though. When you use the right materials and it’s installed well, good insulation can pay for itself fast.

Insulation can make your home more comfortable

Insulation works both ways, keeping the harsh summer sun at bay so your home remains fresher and cooler.

Good home insulation also helps keep damp and mould at bay, because consistent temperatures mean there will be less condensation. This can improve the quality of the air you’re breathing too, and may even help with some health concerns.

Insulation can make your home quieter

Another handy benefit of insulation is that it acts as a barrier and absorbs some sound. It can greatly reduce noise from outside your home, and the sound that carries between rooms in your home.

Your temperature-regulated space will be more peaceful as a result – very useful if you live near noisy roads or have loud neighbours. As much as we love our families, we don’t want them to overhear every conversation either, and sometimes a little more peace and quiet can save the day!

Insulation can save lives

Check whether your chosen insulation is flammable or non-flammable (some will also be labelled as combustible or non-combustible). If a fire does break out, will the insulation catch alight too?

Flammable substances can help fires to spread faster, making them potentially more dangerous, while non-flammable materials don’t contribute to the fire spreading and can give you extra time to get out.

Nobody likes to think about awful situations like this, but it’s so important to take reasonable precautions and avoid disaster.
